Daniel Jones Continues As Second Team Skipper

Daniel Jones Continues As Second Team Skipper

21 Mar 2021

Daniel Jones will continue to lead the promising second team for the 2021 season as the club persevere to put their faith in youth development following the appointment of 18-year old Xander Selby as 1XI captain.

This will be the third season since taking over as second team skipper following the tutelage of popular former captain Jason Fish who helped steady the ship and brought in new players during a crucial transitional period for the club. The youngster has shown real maturity in recent years which has been backed up on the field. In 2018 - his first as captain he took 22 wickets at 17.45 and scored 255 runs including a top score of 82 in a 182-run demolition of Elland 2XI. His performances in 2019 remained consistent as he took 29 wickets with the ball at 13.76, hitting 239 runs and cementing his reputation as a big-hitting all-rounder. The season included his best ever figures for the club of 5-27 (vs Honley 2XI) and 84no (vs Clayton West 2XI).

Daniel; the son of long-serving bowler Warren Jones takes charge of a side with a healthy balance of young and old, although he will miss the wealth of experience that Louis Aspeling brought after he decided to concentrate on work commitments. The young skipper commented:

“After a strange year or so I think we are all just very eager to get a game of cricket under our belts. I am really looking forward to this year pushing for a very long awaited trophy [the club’s last 2XI trophy win was the Earnshaw Cup in 2012, in which Daniel played a starring role]. With such a tightly knitted side I think the main goal is going out and enjoying what we do weekend to weekend, and rebuilding with the local juniors”.

We wish Daniel all the best for the forthcoming season.
