Spinner Xander Moves On

15 Dec 2022

Xander Selby has taken up a fresh challenge in a move to Bowden Cricket Club for the new season after eight years at the club playing from the junior age ranges through to captaincy of the first team.

Since making his first team debut in 2016 after a couple of seasons in the junior ranks, the Loughborough University student became the club’s youngest ever first team skipper after playing last winter in Adelaide. Despite a remorseless league campaign, he capped off the season by memorably hitting a winning six on the final ball and lifted the T20 Trophy following a thrilling final away at Thongsbridge.

The left arm off-spinner cemented his place in the 2018 season playing in the side that won the Sykes Cup against Shepley, returning immaculate figures of 2-26. He also featured in a final appearance a season later against Hoylandswaine, putting in a controlled bowling display (taking 1-36) and has been a mainstay in the first team ever since.

The Selby links are still firmly rooted with father Jon supporting the club and has stepped in to help out the side on numerous occasions. Younger brother Lucas continues to shine in the first team with some flamboyant T20 appearances, most notably scoring his first century for the club at home to Slaithwaite in 2022.

The club would like to extend their best wishes to Xander, who we will look forward to seeing on his frequent visits ‘back home’.
